Marking the seasons can be a foundational spiritual practice useful in cultivating awareness of God’s presence and action in our lives. We gain a deeper and often more graceful understanding of our own process of spiritual change and transformation. Honoring the seasons also allows for much needed variety and flexibility in our spiritual practice as our disciplines may vary as our awareness of where we are coming from, and where we may be heading (spiritually speaking) changes with time. So are the seasons of our spiritual lives.

Beginning 4 weeks before Christmas, Advent spiritually prepares us for the arrival of something expected but long-awaited. Honoring the cycle of Advent can be a foundational spiritual practice as it expands our capacity to set an intention (the sacred art and practice of naming expectation) and cultivate healthy anticipation (the sacred art and practice of waiting with hope).

Yet at its core, Lent is simple a spring cleaning for the heart and the soul – a time to renew our thoughts, patterns and belief systems about ourselves, others, and God. During this retreat the focus is on areas of the soul that long for renewal. Rather than the practice of giving something up, we choose to embrace a new way of thinking.
