MEET COLLEEN

MEET COLLEEN

I am a Spiritual Director trained in the monastic arts of discernment, spiritual companionship, and retreat leadership, and a long-time practitioner of Centering Prayer.

After spending much of my twenties and thirties being the youngest and only person of color at retreats and in contemplative prayer communities, my particular passion is for expanding contemplative practice and teaching to younger and more diverse seekers of a deeper, more loving, more open-hearted and open-minded experience of God.

I do this by leading contemplative prayer groups, workshops, and retreats. I also serve as the Associate Program Director for Stillpoint: A Center for Christian Spirituality based in Los Angeles, CA, and as the Diversity Outreach Coordinator for Contemplative Outreach, a global community inspired by the life and teachings of Father Thomas Keating. And I offer spiritual direction, in the form of one-on-one spiritual companionship, to anyone longing to talk about their experience of God, and who is desiring to listen more deeply for the holy invitations that come as we travel along the spiritual path.

After earning an MA in Theology and Art from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a certificate in the Art of Spiritual Direction, I worked in television in Los Angeles for 15 years before relocating to my hometown of Washington D.C. Here, I continue to explore my creative passions (especially writing) while delighting in the close company of my loving parents, three sisters, and 4 nieces and nephews.

I have always been an east coast girl at heart but my time in Los Angeles was rich with “California girl” experiences. I’ve been a yogi, a singer/songwriter, a reality TV producer, and a network television executive. I’ve also been a movement organizer with the Poor People’s Campaign, a small group leader, a spiritual daughter and sister, and a dear friend.

Raised in the Christian tradition, my own faith practice has evolved and expanded as I’ve gained an increased awareness of the monastic Christian tradition, which is largely more Eastern and mystical in practice and theory.  I consider contemplative Christianity my “denomination.” I believe in a cosmic and universal Christ, who includes all persons and all of creation; and in a loving and living God who welcomes everyone into divine union with the holy, and who inspires me to see the holy in everyone.
